Punjabi Chura / Punjabi Chuda : Traditionally Beautiful
Ah! How can one describe a Punjabi bride? Shining bright in her beautiful lehenga and ever-so-gracious smile, the one thing that stands out prominently in her attire will be her Punjabi chura. Chooriyan are a set of bangles that are worn by a bride on her wedding day. A few traditions also require the chooriyan to be worn for a certain period after the wedding takes place. You can find a large collection of Punjabi bangles on your favourite shopping site. Amidst all the wedding shopping, you can spare a few minutes and shop for these bangles online to keep the tradition alive.
How to Wear the Punjabi Chuda
Traditionally the choora is a combination of two colours: red and white. Sometimes, based on the colour of the lehenga, the red bangles are replaced with a different colour. However, the white remains constant in every pattern. Traditionally, a bride wears 21 bangles. But, nowadays, brides also wear 7, 9, or 11 bangles, just to keep the tradition in-tact.
The Choora Ceremony
Indian weddings are a melting pot of cultures and traditions. There are weddings that span several days with different ceremonies. When you are attending a Punjabi wedding, you will witness a number of ceremonies. From the ‘mehendi night’ to the ‘saat pheras’, there are several other traditional customs that this community observes during a wedding. The choora ceremony is usually held either in the morning of the wedding day or the day before. Traditionally, the bride’s maternal uncle and aunt give her a set of chooriyan to commemorate the marriage. Oh, and here’s yet another interesting fact about this ceremony: the bride’s eyes are closed while she’s being adorned the Punjabi chura. The bride is not supposed to see her chuda until she has been completely dressed in her wedding attire and sits next to the groom in the mandap. In more traditional houses, the bride is supposed to wear the Punjabi chura for a period of one year. Owing to the difficulty in keeping this tradition practical in today’s society, a bride wears it for a period of up to 40 days.
Punjabi Bangles and the Kalire
If you have keenly noticed a Punjabi bride, you will see a few umbrella-shaped hangings elaborately placed on the set of chooriyans. This signifies happiness and eternal love between the newly-wed couple. They, traditionally known as kalire, can be golden or silver in colour. The shape of the kalire has some significance too. The coconut shape of this ornament symbolizes the fact that she will never run out of food in her new home. The metal of the kalire is a symbolisation of wealth and prosperity. Unlike the Punjabi chura, the kalire is left at the temple with the priest, a day after the wedding to seek blessings.
The Significance of This Tradition
Every tradition and custom that is followed in a traditional Indian wedding has its own significance. A bride wearing the Punjabi chuda too has a lot of significance. Besides conveying the fact that the woman is now married, the chura also represents prosperity and well-being of the newly-wed couple.
